Qi Zhang was born in Xiamen, Fujian, China, in 1957. She received the B.S. degree in Physics from Xiamen Unversity, Xiamen, China in 1982 and the M.S. degree in electrical engineering from the University of Regina, Regina, Canada, in 1992.

From 1982 to 1985, she was an Assistant Engineer, and from 1986 to 1989 an Electrical Engineer in Nanjing Electronics Devices Institute, Nanjing, China, where she was involved in III-V semiconductor material research and microwave semiconductor devices measurement techniques. Since September 1992, she has been working as a Teaching Assistant and was a full-time graduate student in the Department of Electrical & Computer Engineering, at the University of Victoria, Victoria, B.C., Canada. She successfully defended her Ph.D. thesis in April 1996. She presently holds a Postdoctoral Fellowship at the Ecole Polytechnique de Montreal.
